Local events celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day

Jun 17, 2026 | 11:00 AM

Local communities will be busy over the coming days celebrating National Indigenous People’s Day.

The actual day of celebration is Sunday, but local events will largely be held Thursday and Friday.

The includes the Melfort & District Museum, where curator Brenda Mellon told northeastNOW that North East School Division students will join them for some festivities on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We’ve been working with the school division as well as Reconciliation Melfort to plan the event,” Mellon said. “We’ll have a lot of stations for the students to go through.”

The community event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., and Mellon said it’ll be family-friendly.

“We have the Office of the Treaty Commissioner joining us with their Treaty Timeline, and we’ll also have displays, crafts, and cultural activities and games.”

There will also be a free wiener roast during the evening.

The event is sponsored by Suncrest College, Prairie North Co-op, and Celebrate Canada, and Mellon said it is a great way for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to get together and celebrate our shared history and another step toward reconciliation efforts.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn and maybe re-learn a few things as well.”

Meanwhile, the Marguerite Riel Centre is hosting a National Indigenous People’s Day concert at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort.

Aaron Arcand will open the show, and Donny Parenteau will be the headliner.

Doors open at 7, with the show starting at 7:30, and you can get tickets by calling the Marguerite Riel Centre or by e-transferring mrcevent2026@outlook.com. You’re asked to specify the number of tickets you would like in the e-transfer.

Tickets are $25 for ages 17+, $10 for under 16 years of age, and free for children under five. You can also get a Family Pass with two adult and two youth tickets for $60.

The Tisdale and District Museum is celebrating National Indigenous People’s Day Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Events will include a flag raising, free barbecue lunch, Métis fiddle music, artisan markets and cultural displays, treaty timeline and educational activities, cultural dances, and a friendship dance.

In Humboldt, Horizon School Division, the City of Humboldt, George Gordon First Nation, and Carlton Trail Regional College are partnering with the inaugural Humboldt Partnership Pow Wow Thursday at the Elgar Pedersen Arena.
