Busy Canada Day in the northeast

Jun 30, 2026 | 5:35 PM

Communities across the region will be celebrating Canada Day on Wednesday, despite concerns about the weather.

Heavy rain in recent days and a forecast that could see showers fall on the country’s 159th anniversary of Confederation.

The Melfort Museum will host the celebration in Melfort for a second consecutive year.

Curator Brenda Mellon told northeastNOW the plan is to still host the Canada Day festivities at the museum grounds.

“Our grounds are just a little bit wet; they aren’t soaking at this point,” Mellon explained.

If the event is forced to move indoors, Mellon said it will take place at the Four Seasons Arena in the Exhibition Grounds. That change would be announced through social media and other avenues should it come to pass.

The Melfort Legion Colour Parade will kick off the event at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, followed by some delegate speeches.

“After that, we have a lot of family activities,” Mellon said.

Attractions include a petting zoo, bouncy castles, a video gaming bus, scavenger hunt, crafts, and other outdoor activities.  The Northern Lights Woodcarvers will also be on hand.

The Bortis Family and Friends, Shelby Murphy, and Iron Orr will be the featured entertainment during the event, which wraps up at 5 p.m.

The Canada Day event will also have plenty to eat, with a barbecue running all day, concessions, and the outdoor oven at the museum providing fresh bread.

“We really hope that people pack up their family and join us for a really fun day.”

Mellon recommended that people bring lawn chairs to the event.

The Nipawin Museum will host their Canada Day Celebration rain or shine at the museum.

Events include stationary engines running, a flour mill, food and pie booth, rope making demo, bouncy castles, live music, and a silent auction.

50/50 tickets are available until 4 p.m., and the winner will be posted on the museum door.

There is also an all-day shuttle service available, and people are asked to keep their pets at home.

In Tisdale, Canada Day at the Museum will begin with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m.

The event will also feature village tours, a bouncy castle, face painting, an antique equipment display, a steam engine demonstration, and food services.

Starting at 12:30, the First Nations Dancers will entertain the crowd, along with For the Love of Country. The day will also feature silent auctions and raffle tickets.

The museum is also celebrating 40 years, and all former presidents and board members are invited to join for a group photo and cake cutting at 3 p.m.

Should there be weather concerns on Canada Day, the Tisdale and District Museum said they would post an update on their social media pages.

Humboldt’s Canada Day celebrations will start with O Canada at Civic Park at 11:45 a.m., followed by a barbecue fundraiser, bouncy castles, petting zoo, and a rock dig.

The Sizzle & Shine Car Show will also be held on Main St. beside Civic Park from noon to 4 p.m., and fireworks at the Uniplex Grounds will start at dusk.
