RCMP are warning the public about a scam currently circulating in the Melfort area.

“People are receiving text messages that appear to come from the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan and is accusing them of committing some sort of traffic violation,” a Melfort RCMP news release stated. “The text includes the name of the police officer, name of the Judge and the court case reference number.”

The text also includes a date that the person is supposed to attend court but does not indicate the location of the court in which the person is supposed to attend. RCMP said the text includes a website the person is supposed to visit to deal with the summons and traffic violation.

According to the RCMP, police and courts would never advise someone of charges via text, and legitimate photo radar tickets are issued by Canada Post. All other charges are hand-delivered by a police officer.
