“The RCMP were welcomed to be part of the opening ceremonies and took part in a very hot, but enjoyable afternoon,” How said. “Additionally, the Battlefords RCMP deployed a boat to support the aquatic events on Murray Lake. Members also stopped at various events to support the athletes whenever possible.” 

Emergency planning also extended to the North Battleford Fire Department, which assisted organizers before the Games began. The department helped develop and review the event’s emergency response plan before shifting to a public safety and preparedness role during the week. 

That included reviewing and approving fireworks permits, providing standby coverage during the fireworks displays and remaining prepared to respond after a tornado watch was issued during the Games. 

“The Fire Department was not required to undertake any significant operational response and the event’s success was the result of thorough planning, clearly defined responsibilities, and strong coordination among organizers and supporting agencies,” Deputy Chief Paul Perry. 

With the games now over, city officials say the benefits extended beyond the sporting venues. 

Mayor Kelli Hawtin described the Games as “absolutely incredible,” saying local businesses saw a noticeable boost from the influx of visitors. 

“I’ve had an opportunity to talk to some of our businesses, like coffee shops and different things like that. Last week was just a phenomenal week for everyone. Lots of great cooperation between our host tribal council, BATC, which we’re so grateful brought that event to the community,” she said. 

Hawtin said the Games also gave North Battleford an opportunity to showcase the community to visitors from across Saskatchewan, while highlighting the city’s ability to host a large-scale event through collaboration between organizers, volunteers and local agencies.
