Longtime Bombers coach, GM Reagan hired by Kelowna Rockets

Mike Reagan is no longer the head coach and general manager of the Flin Flon Bombers.

A Flin Flon native, Reagan has agreed to become the new assistant coach for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League, leaving the Bombers after 19+ seasons behind the bench.

“It’s kind of been difficult to wrap my head around the whole thing; it’s obviously very emotional when you put so much time into an organization and have been around it your whole life. There’s definitely a lot of excitement for this new opportunity as well, but at the same time it’s sad to leave something that’s been so close to me for so long,” he told northeastNOW.

“After winning last year and having been a contender for so long, it just felt like this was the time to make the move. It was time for me to be a little selfish for my career, and I felt that [Flin Flon] achieved what we set out to do, after so many heartbreaks. Again, with it being Kelowna, it was also just an opportunity that I was over the moon about and something that felt meant to be.”

Reagan leaves as an SJHL Hall of Famer, which includes a coaching record of over 600 wins, an SJHL and CJHL Coach of the Year award, six division titles and league finals appearances, and never a season in which the Bombers missed the playoffs.

Now he’ll transition to a different role as an assistant instead of the bench boss and GM, while a former assistant takes over in his place.

“Cole [McCaig] and I are very tight, and I couldn’t have made this decision without knowing that he was going to be taking over. He’s the guy that I wanted, and I contacted him when the opportunity in Kelowna first came up because I wanted to make sure the team was in good hands,” Reagan added.

“My new role is definitely going to be different, but it’s a different type of challenge that I wanted to try. I’m going to be able to focus on the players themselves a lot more, and I know what an assistant can do to relieve some of the pressure off the head coach and general manager. I’m really excited to embrace the new challenge.”

Reagan and the Rockets will begin the season on the road against the Vancouver Giants on Sept. 19.
