Tightly Contested Defeat

Mustangs drop first weekday contest of the season to Weyburn

Oct 8, 2026 | 2:28 AM

The Melfort Mustangs’ three-game win streak has ended. Melfort hosted the Weyburn Red Wings Wednesday night and fell by a score of 4-2.

“I liked some times, and I didn’t like some other times. We had some guys step up into roles, and I think they did a pretty good job, but we just got to put together a more complete 60 minutes. We had our chances, and we had our good moments, but the bad moments were kind of the ones that bit us in the end,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“I think at times we were a bit too casual with the puck, especially on the power play. We knew Weyburn was going to pressure us well, and they definitely did tonight; we just didn’t move the puck well enough or have enough support options. Those plays have to be made right away, so when things take too long to develop, that’s kind of the expected result.”

To the Blue and Green’s credit, the match was tight all the way through, with the majority of the game being played at a score of 3-2.

Unfortunately for Melfort, they couldn’t solve the Weyburn netminder past the early minutes of the second period, before ultimately falling short after giving up the fourth goal of the evening (which came in an empty net) with 10 seconds to play.

The Mustangs are now 4 and 3 on the young season, as they’ll now have to shift their focus to the weekend.

The Stangs are set to take off on their first overnight road trip of the year beginning Friday in North Battleford and ending Saturday in Kindersley.

Friday night’s meeting will be the first between the Mustangs and the North Stars since last campaign’s first-round meeting in league playoffs.
