Another Stellar Road Win

Mustangs blowout Bombers, shock Flin Flon faithful

Oct 17, 2026 | 12:37 PM

What a road performance it was for the Melfort Mustangs on Friday night, as they went into Flin Flon and blew out the defending champion Bombers.

A 6-1 victory for the Mustangs (a contest that was 6-0 through two periods) saw them hand Flin Flon their first regulation, regular-season home loss in nearly two years (last was Oct. 25, 2024).

A bit of a similar feeling for Melfort, as they were the only team last season to beat the Bombers at all (came in overtime) in the Whitney Forum.

“We preached a lot of things this week about how to be successful up here, and I thought that every single guy bought into that 100 per cent, which is just awesome to see as a coach. Everyone was willing to adjust and get into what we wanted to see, so it was good to see them get rewarded for it,” said assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“Obviously it was amazing to see an offensive outburst in this building, but to me what was most important was how we were getting those goals. There was a gutsy aspect to pretty much every goal we scored, and that’s how you become successful as a team in difficult environments.”

What may have been the most gutsy spot for the Stangs was the way in which they scored their second and third goals on the night.

Matthew Bertolin scored with nine seconds left in the first period, presumably giving the Blue and Green a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Apparently, Melfort wasn’t done yet, though, as they added another just seven seconds later, courtesy of Luke Dekay, putting themselves up 3-0 heading to the break, with just two seconds left on the clock.

While the Mustangs did enjoy the win, it’s quickly back to business, as they’re back at their home rink Saturday night when they play host to the visiting Humboldt Broncos.

It’ll be the first meeting of the season between the two, as the Stangs will once again have to bring it if they want to come away with another two points.

“We definitely wanted to enjoy the win, but we reset in the morning to get ready for Humboldt, because it’s another massive game,” Huxley added. “They’re obviously a really strong team; they’ve added some pieces and have a high-flying offence. They’ve got some guys who can put the puck in the net, and we’re gonna have to readjust after playing in a smaller rink. Overall, we just have to be ready for their speed and skill.”

Puck drop from the Northern Lights Palace is set for 7:30 p.m., as Clark Stork will have the broadcast beginning with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m. on 105CJVR and CJVR.com.
