Mustang duo excited for Western All-Star Challenge experience

Some rookie Melfort Mustangs defencemen will be competing in a pair of games in the next 24 hours as members of Team SJHL.

Eric Grandberg and Xavier Doane are on the roster for the 2026 Western All-Star Challenge, which will see them take on Team MJHL.

“It’s definitely really cool; I’m honoured to be a part of this, and I’m really excited for this week and seeing what it’s like. Our teammates back in Melfort have all been pumped for us and congratulating us, so that’s been cool as well,” explained Grandberg.

“An opportunity like this definitely helps with maybe a small confidence boost, just because we’re being awarded for our play so far. We’ve been playing solid together, and we’ve been a D-pairing for most of the year, so it’s just a good extra little confidence boost going forward.”

Both Grandberg and Doane are in their rookie seasons with the Mustangs, although they did get to spend a little bit of time with the club as affiliate call-ups last year.

Now the pair are playing big minutes consistently for the organization, often alongside one another, in every situation.

“Obviously, it’s pretty cool that we get to share this experience together. Hopefully, we get to keep playing together at this showcase and continue to build off our chemistry. It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” Doane added.

The Western All-Star Challenge will pit 40 of the best and brightest players from the Saskatchewan and Manitoba Junior Hockey Leagues, all of whom are born in the year 2008 or later.

The two teams will clash tonight at 7:45 p.m. and tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in Martensville.

“Very well deserved for both. Obviously, as a staff and organization, we’re really proud of them, and they’ve really stepped up for us. They’re two 18-year-olds, but we always say every day they play like veterans, so it’s really deserved for those two,” concluded Stangs assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“We know they’re gonna be up for the challenge and great competition ahead. They’ll gain confidence, experience, and get a chance to learn some things from different staff. They get to play with and against some of the best players their age in Western Canada. They can bring some stuff back with them, but honestly, we hope they don’t really change much because they’ve been excellent so far, and we just want them to keep doing what they’re doing when they come back and make the best of it.”
