Ball keeps scoring, Mustangs defeat North Stars

Feb 7, 2019 | 9:46 AM

The Melfort Mustangs made it three wins in a row on Wednesday, Feb. 6 in Melfort at the Northern Lights Palace.

The Mustangs defeated the Battlefords North Stars 5-3, led by Justin Ball and his three-point evening.

Battlefords got things going first on the scoreboard as Kaden Boser scored just over three minutes into the hockey game. However, the Mustangs took 29 seconds to respond as a Marshall Skapski point shot hit Colton Schell in front and beat Joel Grzybowski for his first career SJHL goal. George King got in on the action a couple minutes later to make it 2-1 for the Mustangs after one period of play.

Melfort had a tough go of it in the second period, only getting one shot in the first 15 minutes of the frame. That was mainly thanks to two North Star powerplays around the halfway point of the period. The Stars got a goal from Braydon Buziak scored at the 3:25 mark of the period, and Owen Lamb added one with about eight minutes to go. The Mustangs did respond late though, as a bouncing puck ended up going off Tanner Zentner and passed Grzybowski, and things were tied 3-3 after two.

The hometown Mustangs took over in the third, and dominated the North Stars. Tanner Zentner notched his second goal of the night around the halfway point giving Melfort the lead. Then, Justin Ball got a nice pass from Carson Albrecht and made no mistake on Grzybowski as the Mustangs went up by two and didn’t look back as they took the game 5-3.

With Justin Ball’s three points, he moved to 85 points (47 goals, 38 assists) on the season, 10 points up on his nearest competitor.

Melfort will look to make it four wins in a row when they visit the Flin Flon Bombers on Saturday, Feb. 9.
