Athletes, coaches, and volunteers came together for a barbecue celebration at Rotary Park on Thursday, June 20, as Melfort Special Olympics held its annual year-end event.

Rodney Mitchell was presented the Brian Smith Memorial Award, the annual award given out by the family of the late Melfort Special Olympics athlete.

Carl Kruger, a coach for Melfort Special Olympics, said Mitchell was given the award for being the most outstanding athlete for 2018-19.

“He competes in just about all the sports and is a very good athlete that just comes out and competes,” Kruger said. “Rodney is on the curling team that’s going to nationals next year and he also competes in bowling and bocce ball.”

Most of Melfort Special Olympics’ focus in the upcoming months will be fundraising for the curling team. The Melfort squad will represent Saskatchewan in the 2020 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Thunder Bay, Ont. in February.

Kruger said one of Melfort Special Olympics’ main fundraisers is their bottle drive at the end of August, although they’ll be finding other ways to raise enough money.

In the meantime, Melfort Special Olympics will enter a float in the city’s parade on July 19, host a walking program in the summer months, and prepare for their Bonspiel in November.
