Two former L.P. Miller students among northeast players committing to junior football

National Signing Day is when Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) teams can officially announce new recruits and a couple of Northeast Saskatchewan high school athletes have made the cut.

Two players who attended L.P. Miller Comprehensive School in Nipawin – quarterback Grant Peters and running back Jett Lalkowski – have committed to play for the Kamloops Broncos in B.C. for 2019.

More than one player moving on to play for the same team isn’t common for L.P. Miller’s football program, but Head Coach Blaine Demmans said multiple players throughout his tenure have gone on to suit up for the Broncos.

“It’s good for them and the program,” Demmans said. “It speaks a lot about what they’ve done here at this level and the work they’ve put in off the field. Grant’s an undersized guy but makes up for it with his arm strength and how he reads the game, and Jett has all the skills set. He would have been amazing last year, but he tore his ACL prior, and got back a little early when we got into our playoffs this past season. You could tell he wasn’t at 100 per cent but he’s a skilled player that’s for sure.”

Peters and Lalkowski were the cherries on top of the 2018 L.P. Miller football team, as Demmans wished some of his other players would continue their careers.

“A lot of them were starters in Grade 9 and 10,” he said. “The experience and everything they learned from there, then their Grade 11 and 12 years, is where we really showed on the scoreboard. Both years we ended up making it to the semifinals but couldn’t get that extra push.”

Demmans and the L.P. Miller football staff will keep an eye on Peters, Lalkowski, and the rest of their players as they want to see them succeed in all aspects in life.

“We always preach to the boys ‘family first, education, then football,’” Demmans said. “They know the importance of all of those and we just want to make sure they continue on and keep giving their best.”

Other Northeast Saskatchewan graduates moving on to junior football include two defensive linemen staying in the province. Carrot River High School’s Chase Kozun will suit up for the Saskatoon Hilltops and Tisdale Middle and Secondary School’s Pavel LaLonde will play for the Regina Thunder.

Editor’s note: Both Peters and Lalkowski attended the school, but are not graduates of L.P. Miller Comprehensive School as an earlier version of this story suggested. The current version of the story has been updated to reflect the proper information.
