New Bursaries

Carlton Trail College, Sask Polytech announce new bursaries for trades training

Jul 31, 2019 | 10:20 AM

Some people wanting to take some trades training at Carlton Trail College could be in line for some bursaries.

A partnership with Carlton Trail and Saskatchewan Polytechnic is now giving women, Indigenous people, newcomers, and people with disabilities the opportunity for bursaries with the help of the Government of Canada’s Skilled Trades Awareness and Readiness (STAR) Program. The programs that have these bursaries available are the electrician, welding, and plumbing and pipefitting applied certificates.

“The programs that bursaries are being made available through are ones that have been tagged to try and create a more inclusive workforce,” Carlton Trail’s Manager of Development and Communications Jennifer Brooks said. “Certainly with a number of strong manufacturers within our region, there is a need to continue to provide employees with the skills that they need to support the labour market within our larger region.”

Brooks added on top of making these professions more inclusive, the new bursaries also help with keeping the workforce full of professionals in these fields.

“We know that as more people retire and leave the work force,” she said. “A wide variety of opportunities in the trades will continue to increase.”

The bursaries can be used for books, tuition costs, learning resources, and any other course materials. Brooks said the success of their program graduates show the need for the jobs in the workforce.

“We know that our program graduates find employment,” Brooks told northeastNOW. “Indicating that there is a strong need for skill-based training.”

Prospective students can start applying for the coming school year, and they can apply at Carlton Trail College’s website.
