New councillor elected in Hudson Bay

Hudson Bay has a new member of town council.

Meagan Dickson was voted in during Wednesday’s byelection.

The mother of four said she is excited for this new opportunity.

“It will be a very big learning curve for me. I want to be more involved with town council and see how it works and see how I can be a member of the team,” Dickson said.

She is already a very active member of the community and wants to further that involvement by being an advocate for the younger people in town.

“I feel that I have some insight into the wants and needs of the younger people and I have a commitment to make the community a safe place to raise a family,” Dickson said.

As a lifetime member of Hudson Bay, Dickson added that she wants to see infrastructure and facilities maintained at a safe and affordable standard.

Dickson beat out two other candidates for the seat on council with 159 of 348 votes cast. Lorne Babyck followed with 133 votes and Doug Binkley had 56.

“I am quite a bit younger than the other two candidates; I don’t have as much experience as them in terms of council and in life I guess, but it was nice to see the community supported me,” Dickson said.

A small percentage of residents cast a vote in the byelection which Dickson found disappointing.

“Out of a possible 1,100 voters only 30 per cent came out, 348 votes were cast so it was disappointing to see that not more people wanted to have a say,” Dickson said.

The first thing that she plans to do is to help identify the needs of the community.

“I am very grateful for the support from the community and all those that will support me in this journey into the new role as a council woman,” Dickson said.
