In his final year of junior hockey, Melfort Mustang’s defenceman Alex Rondeau has a chance to add some hardware to his trophy case.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) announced the divisional nominees for their annual awards. Rondeau is this year’s Sherwood Division representative for the Defenceman of the Year award.

In 43 games so far this season, the Drummondville, Que. product has 33 points. He ranks first on the team among defencemen in points-per-game (0.77), and he is first among defencemen on the team in goals with 10. Expand those numbers to throughout the SJHL, Rondeau is seventh in overall points by defencemen, but is tied for the least amount of games played among players in the top 10.

Rondeau’s 10 goals also have him in a tie for fourth in that category among blue liners. He’s played the least amount of games in the top five in that category.

Outside of his offensive abilities, Rondeau has been trusted all over the ice by Head Coach Trevor Blevins. Rondeau pairs with Nolan Kadachuk as the only 20-year-olds on a defence core that allows only 2.86 goals-per-game, good for second best in the SJHL.

Rondeau is in his second season with the Mustangs and has played 101 regular season games, tallying 54 points.

Up against Rondeau for the Top Defenceman award is Battlefords North Stars blue liner Matthew Fletcher who is third in defencemen scoring, as well as Devan Harrison of the Estevan Bruins. He’s 10th among defencemen in scoring, but is a major piece of a Bruins defence core that allows the fourth least amount of goals in the SJHL.
