Montreal Canadiens alumni game cancelled in Wynyard

A fundraiser this Saturday for the arena in Wynyard is cancelled.

The arena was set to host Montreal Canadiens Alumni but bad weather in Ontario and Quebec cancelled their flights.

Sigourney Anderson with Wynyard Recreation said the funds raised from the alumni game would have contributed to paying off the newly built Cooperative Place.

“It was just completed in October of 2019 so currently we are paying that off so the fundraiser was just to continue paying off that loan,” Anderson said.

The cost of the Cooperative Place build was $11.3 million. The groundbreaking for the project was back in April of 2018. The completion and grand opening was held around 18 months later.

The new addition to the community is not only a rink but the clubhouse for the golf course and also features a mezzanine for events and a walking track.

The committee is hopeful the game will be postponed to next hockey season, which Anderson said alumni game organizers were on keen on doing as well.

Most of the fundraising at the game wasn’t necessarily through the ticket sales but through purchases made at the concession and other efforts on the night.

The other stops for the Canadiens alumni included Saskatoon, Beechy, and Regina.

“I think some of the other communities had some entertainment and things going on along with the game whereas we didn’t,” Anderson said. “The drawing card was the game itself so I imagine it was much easier for us to just cancel.”

Those who purchased tickets for the game will be refunded in full but Anderson said they will hopefully have another date announced soon.

“We are still in a bit of whirlwind with trying to figure things out, we just got the call late yesterday along with everyone else,” Anderson said.
