City of Melfort re-opens tennis courts, skateboard park, pickleball courts

A number of facilities are reopening in Melfort as the provincial government gets set to launch Phase three of the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan on Monday.

The city already opened a number of facilities on Friday.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW the city thanks residents for being patient while facilities remained closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The skateboard park is now open at Spruce Haven Recreation Area, the tennis courts are open at Bemister Ave. E. and on Broadway Ave. S., and our pickleball courts are open on Stovel Ave. W.,” Lutz said.

The open spaces and walking trails remain open.

The public is being reminded to take caution that the outdoor facilities are not under supervision. Residents are also asked to follow the provincial health guidelines, and Lutz said the city is asking that parents to oversee and supervise their children, and that they are following guidelines when using the city’s facilities.

Some of the provincial health guidelines outlined by the city include:

• Stay home if you have symptoms
• Avoid touching shared or communal surfaces
• You must maintain two metres distance from other households
• Groups are limited to a maximum of 30 people
• Wearing a mask is optional

Motorists are also being reminded the speed limit near the skateboard park has been reduced to 30 km/h instead of the 50 km/h on the rest of Shadd Dr.

The Town of Tisdale has also re-opened their tennis courts, according to CAO Brad Hvidston.

Meanwhile, Melfort’s City Hall is re-opening on Monday, and the city will launch their Play Melfort Community Ambassador Program.

The water fill station is expected to re-open Wednesday on Broadway Ave. N.

Lutz said the city will be monitoring the situation, and the status of all facilities is subject to change.
