Homecoming for home clear-outs: Garage sale season in the northeast

Northeast Saskatchewan residents didn’t wait long to get their garage sale game on.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced that garage sales could resume on Thursday, July 23, during the coronavirus pandemic.

One Melfort resident who set up shop on the first day is Pierre Duguay. He told northeastNOW the first day of sales was good, but business slowed down going into day two.

“At this time of the year, a lot of people are planning to go camping, so it quiets down,” Duguay said.

The kicker for garage sales resuming is the provincial health guidelines, which includes:

  • Signs that promote two meters of physical distancing between attendees
  • Outdoor sales, or at minimum a well-ventilated area such as a garage with open windows and doors
  • No groups or extended households; individual family garage sales only
  • No food or drinks given
  • Ensuring hands are washed or sanitized after handling cash
  • Clean and disinfect tables and items prior to sale

The new guidelines haven’t been too much of a learning curve for Duguay, who said in the 57 years of marriage between he and his wife, they hosted about three garage sales prior to Thursday. He did note how few patrons are wearing masks.

Duguay intends to run one more garage sale the following weekend at his other home on Macleod Ave.

“I’ve got lots of stuff to get rid of and the price is right,” he laughed.
