WestJet now offering COVID-19 insurance for Saskatchewan air travellers

If you fly with WestJet out of Saskatchewan, you now qualify for free COVID-19 insurance.

Earlier this week, both WestJet and Air Canada announced they would offer the insurance across the country — except in Saskatchewan.

Both airlines cited the province’s regulatory requirements.

On Thursday, WestJet told 650 CKOM that Saskatchewan residents are now eligible and included in its COVID-19 coverage.

In a release, the airline said: “Working together with our provider TuGo and Saskatchewan insurance regulators, we are now able to ensure residents of Saskatchewan are included in our coverage.”

The insurance includes COVID-19-related emergency medical and hospital costs, as well as quarantine accommodation costs, if travellers test positive or get diagnosed with COVID-19 while on their trip.

In an email, a TuGo spokesperson said the provider will cover guests for international travel — excluding the United States — for trips between Friday and Aug. 31, 2021. The coverage will be up to $100,000.

“This coverage is specifically designed to cover COVID-19 medical and related expenses only, and doesn’t replace existing travel insurance, while the Government of Canada’s ‘avoid all non-essential travel’ advisory (level 3) is in place,” the TuGo spokesperson added.
