Even though only five games have been played by the Melfort Mustangs in the 2020-21 season, the roster for 2021-22 is already taking shape.

The Mustangs announced on Wednesday, Dec. 2 that forward Connor Hvidston has committed to the club for next season. He was the ninth overall pick by the Mustangs in the 2019 SJHL Draft.

The 2004-born Tisdale product began this season with the Yorkton Maulers of the Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) and had tallied six goals and six assists in seven games before new public health measures paused the season.

“He’s a player with big offensive upside and is someone we hope will play in our program for years to come.” Mustang head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins said in a release. “We look forward to bringing him in next season and continuing our growth with young players for the future.”

In 2019-20, his first U18 season, Hvidston led the Maulers in scoring with 14 goals and 14 assists. The team named him Rookie of the Year, and MVP that season.

Prior to his U18 career in Yorkton, Hvidston was a member of the North East Wolfpack U15 AA squad for two seasons between 2017 and 2019. He tallied 30 points as a rookie, and then followed it up with 57 points in 31 games in his final U15 season, helping him to be drafted in the first round of the SJHL Bantam Draft.

Hvidston was also drafted in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, going in the seventh round to the Swift Current Broncos.
