Read and win during Melfort Public Library summer program

Jun 15, 2021 | 4:00 PM

Registration is now open for the summer reading program at the Melfort Public Library.

The program will include online programs and activities, as well as grab and go crafts and librarian hide and seek.

Librarian Rene Chambers told northeastNOW the program will look different again this year, but the goal remains the same.

“It just encourages kids to keep reading over the summer months,” Chambers said.

There are many perks for kids to continuing reading over the summer according to Chambers.

“For every 10 picture books or two chapter books, the kids get to play PLINKO and they will win prizes and treats,” Chambers said. “The prizes and treats have all be generously donated from local businesses again as well.”

Participants will be able to enter draws for larger prizes as well at the library as well as the Wapiti Regional Library draws.

New this year will be pop-up story walks throughout the summer which has been sponsored by TD Canada Trust.

“We will pop them up at playgrounds or if there are events going on for people to walk through and enjoy,” Chambers said.

In a typical year, around 250 kids register for the program, but Chambers is not sure if the reach will be that large this year.

“We aren’t having the kick-off party like we normally do and that usually brings a lot of kids on the first day,” Chambers said.

The program theme is ‘Game on’ which is where the librarian hide-and-seek comes in. Pictures of each of Melfort librarians will be hidden around the city in the month of July and kids will be asked to use clues to locate the pictures. Once participants have found all of them, they will qualify for prizes.

In August, book cover bingo will be back after the library saw great success with it last summer.

There will also be a summer reading program for teens and adults. For every book borrowed, a scratch and win will be given for chances at prizes from local businesses.

“We are still pretty limited with what we can do with restrictions still place, but we are hoping that by the fall we can bring back story time and other programs,” Chambers said.

All the details will be posted on the Melfort Public Library Facebook page throughout the summer. Logbooks to keep track of summer reading can be found online.

“We look forward to seeing everyone this summer,” Chambers said.
