Riverdogs end season with U14B provincial gold

The U14B Tisdale Riverdogs brought home some provincial gold over the weekend following a grueling slog to the top of the podium.

Team manager, Kali Cortus, said the team was down 0–10 against Watrous during the early play this past weekend but held on until a 15–18 loss. They would eventually have a rematch against the undefeated Watrous team in the final after beating the Battleford Bandits in the semi-finals. After taking Watrous to two extra innings, the Riverdogs would take the win and the gold, 7–4.

The provincial win is a great cap to a strange season, said Cortus. With provincials cancelled last year and the possibility of a season this year up in the air, the team got together to practice starting early in the spring, long before they even knew whether they would actually be able to play any games.

When the province dropped the outdoor sports restrictions, the team was ready to go, said Cortus.

“We have a pretty committed coaching staff that kept working with the girls,” Cortus told northeastNOW. “Once we could go outside, we were practicing one to two times a week.”

Joining the North Central League, the team got some home-and-home and doubleheaders in during the regular season against teams from Humboldt, Watrous, Lanigan and Muenster. As well as winning silver in a tournament in Moose Jaw; the only 14B tournament event in the province this year, before heading to the provincial match up.

“We ended with a bang, that’s for sure,” she said.

While the team is based in Tisdale, the 13 players represent communities from across the northeast including Nipawin, Bjorkdale, Weekes, Hudson Bay, Carrot River, Naicam and Red Earth. All of their dedicated coaching staff were also from other communities and three were non-parent volunteers.

“It was super nice to have their help with the team and always being there for us as well.”
