Anderson, Olafson lead way as Mustangs respond against Millionaires

Dec 5, 2021 | 9:09 AM

The Melfort Mustangs broke their five-game losing streak on Saturday, Dec. 4 to close out Parent Billet Weekend with a 5-2 win over the Melville Millionaires.

Defenceman Leith Olafson was one of two players to score twice in the contest and said the mindset was to play their game, and nobody elses.

“Focus on ourselves, don’t worry about what they’re doing,” he said. “And it worked out pretty good for us.”

Carter Anderson opened the scoring just over five minutes into the contest for Melfort, his first goal in 13 games, and first point in eight contests. That goal was followed by Olafson’s first career SJHL marker just about a minute later. Seth McCulloch notched his ninth of the season a bit later, and all of a sudden, Melfort held the 3-0 lead after 1.

Anderson scored once again early in the period to extend Melfort’s lead to 4-0, but Melville would wake up a bit before the end of the second as Jonathon Krahn scored twice to cut the lead in half.

Olafson’s second of the night came midway through the third period as an insurance marker to give the Mustangs the 5-2 win.

“It’s a good feeling, getting that monkey off my back, it’s been a while since I’ve scored one,” Olafson said. “And to get two in the same night is pretty nice.”

James Venne stopped 27 of 29 for his fourth win of the year for the Mustangs.

Melfort improves to 14-9-1-4 on the season and are back at it on Wednesday when they host the Weyburn Red Wings.
