Captain Tkachuk scores in overtime as Mustangs dim Stars

It was a back and forth affair in North Battleford on Friday, Dec. 10 as the Melfort Mustangs defeated the Battlefords North Stars in overtime by a 3-2 score.

While the goal-scoring was back and forth, the Melfort Mustangs dominated the shot clock from the get go in the contest, outshooting Battlefords 19-6, and 17-8 in periods one and two.

“Tried to keep it simple,” said Assistant Coach Dan Meyers. “We just told the boys ‘lets come out with speed tonight, let’s get some hits in, and just compete’.”

Curtis Hammond opened the scoring in the second period for the Mustangs on the powerplay with his 14th goal of the season. Battlefords responded on a powerplay of their own as Emmett Wurst tied things up for the Stars.

The third period was the period of the Doell’s and brothers Nolan for Melfort, and Holden for Battlefords each scored for their respective clubs. Nolan’s 20th of the year put Melfort ahead just 21 seconds into the third period, while Holden tied the game with just over two minutes to play with the goalie pulled.

In overtime, Melfort seemed to have most of the possession and they were able to get a late powerplay with just over a minute to play. Then, with just over 45 seconds to play in overtime, Ben Tkachuk had some room in the right wing circle and fired a wrist shot passed Stars goalie Michael Harroch to give the Mustangs their third win in a row.

Meyers said he had a good feeling about this one with everyone doing their job and working hard.

“I had a good feeling we would win,” he said. “Even though we haven’t, in the past, won very often in this building, but I had a good feeling tonight and the boys pulled it off.”

The Mustangs improve to 16-9-1-4 and continue their western road swing on Saturday, Dec. 11 in Kindersley taking on the Klippers.
