Christmas and winter fun aplenty in the City of Melfort

There is no shortage of things to do in the City of Melfort heading into the Christmas holidays.

Friday night will feature the second annual twinkle tour event starting at 6:30 p.m.

Recreation programmer Shannon Marshall told northeastNOW the nominations into the Christmas lights contest are compiled into a map for the twinkle tour.

“People are welcome to stop in at the Kerry Vickar Centre starting at 6:30 p.m., pick up a hot cocoa and a printed map and there will be a special visit there from Mrs. Claus,” Marshall said.

There are about 60 homes on the list which is down from last year but still a sign of good spirits and Christmas cheer around the community according to Marshall. The deadline for nominations is Friday at noon.

Residents are rewarded for their creativity with three prizes on the line. Nominations will be judged based quantity, color and creativity by members of Melfort Communities in Bloom.

The public is also asked to take part in judging by placing votes on which home they like the best for the people’s choice prize.

“That started last year and is back by popular demand,” Marshall said.

The twinkle tour map will be available digitally up until the week after Christmas for those who would like to take the tour at another time.

The City of Melfort is also sponsoring two matinee showings of the movie Elf at Melfort Dynasty Twin Cinemas on Saturday, Dec. 18.

“The showings are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and that is free admission,” Marshall said.

All COVID-19 protocols will be in place including proof of vaccination to enter the theatre.

The Crokicurl rink at Memorial Garden will be open for game play by this weekend.

“Crokicurl is very popular for all ages, it doesn’t require any special equipment, just dress warm and everything you need is there for you,” Marshall said.

The pop-up rinks at the Burke playground and Spruce Haven park will be ready by this weekend as well.

“We also hope to have the Windsor Pond surface ready for skating by next week as well which was a big draw for people last year,” Marshall said.

The Christmas Village at the Melfort and District Museum will be open this weekend, as well as evenings of Dec. 20–22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is by donation to the museum and the North Central Health Care Foundation.

The Christmas lights tour at the Melfort Campground runs this Thursday to Sunday and Dec. 23 and 26. The tour features light displays that have been sponsored by local businesses. Admission is $10 at the gate with all proceeds to local service groups that are helping.

“There is lots to see and do and take in this holiday season with friends and family and we just hope everyone gets out and has a great time,” Marshall said.
