Comeback Falls Short

Mustangs nearly complete comeback but fall to Ice Wolves at home

Jan 26, 2022 | 9:38 AM

The first two period of the Melfort Mustangs and La Ronge Ice Wolves game on Tuesday, Jan 25 at the Northern Lights Palace was all La Ronge… for about 40 minutes of the contest.

La Ronge defeated the Mustangs 5-4 on Tuesday and led the game 5-1 through two periods before Melfort stormed back in the third.

Parker Layton opened the scoring for La Ronge, but that was followed by Nolan Doell notching his 25th goal of the season against his former team to tie the game, but after that, the Ice Wolves took over.

Aaron Greyeyes scored in the first, while Gavin Mattey, Kole Christensson, and Colten Thompson added on in the second to make it 5-1.

Mustangs assistant coach Danny Meyers said the reason for the score after two was simple.

“Work ethic is really what it came down to,” he said. “We were soft, it looked like we were scared out there and I hate saying that about my team, but that’s what it looked like.”

However, the Mustangs did battle back in the third period, scoring a pair of goals 17 seconds apart before five minutes had even elapsed. Doell and Carter Anderson were the goal scorers, while Trenton Curtis added the fourth goal a few minutes later.

“We got our feet going, we took some body, and we started driving the puck to the net,” Meyers said. “We had a good outcome in the third, but you can’t just play one period.”

The loss is Melfort’s fifth loss in a row, and fourth consecutive by one goal. The Mustangs are back at it on Friday as they host the Notre Dame Hounds.
