Nipawin set for seventh annual bull riding event

Stop number two of the 2019 3D Bull Riding Tour will stampede into Nipawin.

The seventh annual Nipawin RONA PBR, a bull riding event hosted by 3D Bullriding Inc. and the Professional Bull Riders of Canada, will see nearly 30 bull riders and their hooved companions compete to advance to the Canadian Touring Pro Final.

Susan Westgard, co-chair of Nipawin Events Inc. (NEI) who brings the bull riding event to Nipawin, told northeastNOW the group wanted to bring something different to the community.

“We just wanted to bring another event to Nipawin, something different than a rodeo,” Westgard said. “This is just bull riding. We sell 1,200 tickets, and if we’ve got people coming to town from our area they’ll potentially buy gas, meals, maybe shop at our local retailers. It’s all got economic spinoff for Nipawin.”

The main difference in this year’s Nipawin RONA PBR is an indoor tailgating party. With the Town of Nipawin renewing a three-year deal with NEI to host the Nipawin RONA PBR until 2021, Westgard believes there’s room for growth.

“We’re always looking to expand, bring new ideas, our committee works great together and they all bounce ideas off of each other,” she said. “We’re always thinking of what we can do in the future, either for half time shows or other events to support the community.”

The Nipawin RONA PBR takes place at Centennial Arena on Friday, May 10 from 7 to 9:30 p.m., with the tailgating party taking place at 5:30 p.m.
