Melfort Roller Hockey setting up for inaugural season

A new sport in the city of Melfort is attempting to start off on the right blade.

Melfort Roller Hockey’s inaugural season is getting underway after months of organizing, registering, and practicing.

Dylan Doehl, president of Melfort Roller Hockey, told northeastNOW the drive to start the league came after he and his wife talked to their oldest son about playing summer hockey.

“We looked into it and got into a conversation of when I played roller hockey back in Regina when I was his age,” Doehl said. “It became a big part of my life. How it made me grow as a player, respect the game of hockey a lot more, learn how to move the puck, and focus on more of a team play than just shoot the puck down the ice so you can get a break.”

To learn more about running a roller hockey league, Doehl contacted his previous organizers in Regina. One thing led to another, and after the city approved the Melfort Roller Hockey league, Doehl was in search of anyone to help get it rolling.

“Getting people to help organize it has been awesome,” he said. “The kids that have already joined have all been really good; they and their parents have been helping out to get other kids to sign up. Right now we are low on numbers. Being a new sport and trying to get kids to come out has been a little bit harder.”

Melfort Roller Hockey currently has enough kids to suit one team, but its goal is to get as many players and teams as possible. Doehl said the league will have another tryout day on Tuesday, May 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Northern Lights Palace.

Doehl said the league is looking for boys and girls aged five to 16. The tryout doesn’t require a season-long commitment. He encourages anyone who’s interested in registering or trying out to contact Melfort Roller Hockey on Facebook.
