The warm weather is helping to move progress along at Stovel Park in Melfort.

The ‘Friends of Stovel Park’ group that has been working to revitalize the park for the past two years are sticking to their June 22 grand re-opening date.

The gazebo has gone up at the park and work is underway on the pickleball courts and washrooms.

Spokesperson Myrna Buckingham said the grand re-opening of the park on Stovel Ave. W will include a full day of activities.

“We have a pancake breakfast planned, we will have a lunch and a supper,” Buckingham said.

Previously, it was thought that the park would be open to the public prior to the grand-reopening but that isn’t the case any longer.

“There is still quite a bit of work left to be done so we are just really looking forward to that date of June 22,” Buckingham said.

The park was originally installed by the Melfort Elks who decided they would make upgrades rather than see the park turn into a piece of the past.

The Elks are joined by several other community groups and volunteers in their efforts to make the park new again.

More funds are needed to reach their original goal and they will continue to raise funds with hopes of adding even more to the park as time goes on.

The group selling raffle tickets for a chance to win $10,000 to raise funds for the park. The draw will be made at the grand re-opening that itself will also serve as a fundraiser.
