Team effort on display as two Broncos honoured with league’s end of year awards

The Humboldt Broncos are once again celebrating some wins off the ice as two players were honoured by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) during its Player of the Year awards.

Graduating 20-year-old, Rayce Ramsay, is leaving the league with three awards to his name; goalie of the year, MVP, and player of the year.

Ramsay had a phenomenal season with 41 wins in the Broncos net, a record-breaking number that many on the team think he will keep for a while, as well as nine losses and 50 starts on the Broncos line.

Ramsay also ended his junior career with a .930 save percentage and nearly 3,000 minutes, a number that no other goalie in any junior league in the country was able to replicate.

Throughout the season, Ramsay has taken no credit for the success, always putting the attention on his offence and defensive lines that made his job easy.

Now, he is ready to join his new collegiate team in the fall as he has committed to the University of Toronto team for the 2022-2023 season. While the awards are nice to have, he said they won’t have much impact on his future.

“It’s always nice to be acknowledged, but it just shows what you did in the past. So I’m just looking forward to the future now, just keep working to get better so I can go to U of T and try to make an impact and help out my team there next year.”

Meanwhile, Connor McGrath is getting junior hockey accolades early in his career as he took home rookie of the year, forward of the year, and top scorer.

Although McGrath spent most of the season leading the league in scoring, including finishing his first regular junior season with 84 points in 56 games, that was not something he paid attention to.

“I just try to go out there and be my best self every night. I try to do whatever it takes to help the team win games.”

Once again, McGrath said his accomplishments are not his own.

“I’ve been working pretty hard these last couple of years. So to get some recognition that feels good. But also, it’s a big testament to the group of guys that we had, and like the coaching staff and all the confidence and stuff they put in me.”

The Broncos are also looking to the future as they host future Broncos at their spring camp this weekend.
