Broncos goalie named finalist for CJHL MVP

After a stellar season between the pipes a member of the Humboldt Broncos could be named the best player in Canada.

Broncos goaltender Rayce Ramsay is one of five players nominated for MVP of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL).

The 20-year-old has already claimed three SJHL awards, including top goaltender and MVP and is a finalist for the CJHL Goaltender of the Year.

When asked how he felt about the honour, the humble Bronco said he couldn’t have succeeded this year without his team.

“I’m grateful for the nomination but I do credit a lot of the acknowledgements to my teammates, and my coaches, and just the group of guys we had. So it’s nice for sure but it just goes to show more what we did as a team this year, rather than individual.”

Ramsay finished this past season with 41 wins in 50 starts and logged almost 4,500 regular-season minutes in his Junior-A career.

When he looks back on his years in Humboldt, Ramsay said he did the best he could to help his team succeed.

“We had a really deep team of guys who could score up on that front end. I just felt like I could be that guy to win. The odd mistake did happen (but) I could be there for boys and keep us in the games when they need me to.”

Ramsay broke into the league as a 17-year-old with the Broncos in 2018 and suited up for the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League for the 2019-20 season.

He has committed to playing hockey for the University of Toronto next season.

Also up for the CJHL MVP is Ryan McAllister of the Brooks Bandits, Sean James from the Smith Falls Bears, Braden Fischer of the Virden Oil Capitals and Dalton Bancroft of the Trenton Golden Hawks.
