Mustangs add sixth commit of off-season, third in last two days

The Melfort Mustangs are ramping up their efforts at re-tooling their team for the upcoming 2022/23 season.

The Mustangs, who last appeared in the Canalta Cup final in 2019 and last won, when they did so in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016, have already announced their sixth commitment of this off-season.

Melfort, who lost six graduating players upfront this past year, is well on its way to filling those holes, announcing 2004-born Jacob Hufty as their fifth forward commit this spring and third in the past 48 hours.

The 6’2”, 175 lb, Kamloops, B.C. product played this past season for the Thompson Blazers U18 AAA club in the BC Elite Hockey League (BCEHL.) In 36 games, he was third on the team in goals with 14 while adding 17 helpers, which gave him a tie for the team lead with 31 points.

In a press release sent to northeastNOW, Trevor Blevins, head coach and general manager of the Mustangs, hinted at some of the highlight reel plays fans may be able to expect from the newest member of their club.

“Jacob is an excellent skater that uses his speed to his advantage. He plays with energy and is dangerous around the net. He is an exciting player for fans to see this season.”

Although Hufty spent most of last season with the Thompson Blazers, it wasn’t the only team he suited up for. In four games with the Merritt Centennials of the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL), Hufty was held pointless, however, in six games, (two regular season and four playoff), he scored twice for the Kamloops Storm of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL).

Prior to that, Hufty spent the 2020/2021 COVID-shortened season, playing nine games for the Okanagan Hockey Academy U18 Prep squad, scoring six goals and adding eight assists, good for 14 points in just nine games.

The Mustangs are excited to announce and welcome Hufty to their organization and the city of Melfort.
