Melfort Mustang’s graduate, Curtis Hammond, has officially committed to extending his hockey career and attending post-secondary.

Hammond will suit up for the St. Norbert College Green Knights down in Wisconsin as part of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association in NCAA Division III.

The Fort St. John, B.C. product came to Melfort prior to the 2021/2022 SJHL season and immediately made an impact, scoring three goals in his first two games, dawning the blue and green.

His hot start was just the beginning of a shorter yet successful Mustangs’ career, as he would go on to score a total of 28 goals on the season, the second-most on the Mustangs, and tied for the seventh-most in the SJHL. He also added 22 assists, good for 50 points on the year, which was third on the team.

Come playoff time, Hammond then tallied four goals and three assists for seven points in seven post-season games.

In a press release sent to northeastnow, Hammond explained his decision regarding his promising future.

“I chose St. Norbert College to further my education and hockey career because of the outstanding history and the culture of the school,” he said. “Hearing all the good things from people around me and past coaches really assured me that St. Norbert was the place to play. The coaching staff and everyone involved in the program are top tier. It couldn’t have happened without the countless support from my family, friends, coaches, and teammates. I’m excited to get down to Wisconsin and get things started.”

Prior to his time as a ‘Stang, Hammond spent two years in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), starting his Junior ‘A’ career with the Bonnyville Pontiacs in 2019/2020 scoring four goals and adding 11 assists in 36 games, while suiting up for one playoff game, as well. Then, in 2020/2021, Hammond would play in a total of 11 games with the Grand Prairie Storm, scoring one goal and adding an assist.

Prior to that, Hammond had a total of 47 games of experience for the Cariboo Cougars in the BC U18 AAA circuit.

The Melfort Mustangs are proud of their recent graduate for extending his playing days and would like to thank Curtis for his year in Melfort, as they wish him all the best with his exciting journey ahead.
