Mustangs fall to Stars in back and forth, overtime affair

Oct 1, 2022 | 9:08 AM

It was overtime heartbreak for the Melfort Mustangs on Friday, Sep. 30 as the Mustangs fell 5-4 in overtime to the Battlefords North Stars at the Northern Lights Palace.

Neither team led by more than a goal in the contest as a back and forth affair saw a 1-1 tie through 1, a 3-2 Mustangs lead through 2, and a 4-4 tie through regulation before Kian Bell won it in overtime for the Stars on a bouncing puck that hit Mustang netminder Joel Favreau in the back before trickling in.

Mustang forward Zac Somers had a goal and an assist in the contest and he said while they were dominant at points in the game, it wasn’t there all the time.

“At times I thought we were really good,” he said. “But the consistency just wasn’t there for the full sixty. Tough bounce thereat the end, but come back harder tomorrow.”

Dawson Leroux, Kevin Minnoch, and Logan Cox also scored for Melfort in the loss.

Somers said that while Battlefords holds on to their perfect record at 7-0-0-0, the 2-3-2-0 Mustangs aren’t far off from beating them.

“They’re not the king of the world,” Somers said. “They’re definitely beatable.”

Melfort will get right back on the metaphorical horse on Saturday night when they host Notre Dame.
