Mustangs bounce back in dominating performance over Hounds

Oct 2, 2022 | 9:17 AM

Saturday night at the Northern Lights Palace was all Melfort Mustangs as they defeated the Notre Dame Hounds by a 6-1 score just a night after a heartbreaking 5-4 overtime loss to Battlefords.

Riley Ashe scored the first two goals in the contest and added and said it was probably their most complete performance all season.

“From each guy on the team, our goalies to our forwards, everyone played hard,” he said.

The two goals mark Ashe’s first two goals at home on the season, and the 16-year-old said it felt pretty good to put a few in on home ice.

“They felt great,” Ashe said. “I was just in there and I got those two greasers, but it was worth it.”

Thanks to Ashe’s two first-period goals, it was a 2-0 Melfort lead through one period, and the Mustangs wouldn’t look back from there. A 4-0 lead after two would propel the team ahead even further, and another pair of goals in the third would seal the deal.

Leyton Holoien also added two goals in the victory, while Hayden Tuba and Brett Ward would notch the other markers. Tuba would also add three assists on the night, and Aidyn Hutchinson would also add a pair of helpers.

James Venne stopped 18 of 19 shots he saw come his way in his return to the Mustangs from the WHL.

The Mustangs improve to 3-3-2-0 on the season and they’ll meet the Melville Millionaires on the road on Tuesday night.
