Favreau, Ashe lead way as Mustangs shutout Bruins

Oct 22, 2022 | 9:21 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are back into the win column after a 3-0 win over the Estevan Bruins on Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

Riley Ashe scored six minutes into the hockey game, and then it was goalie Joel Favreau and the Mustangs defence taking over from there. Favreau only needed to stop 19 shots in this one, and he says the team in front of him was excellent.

“We controlled the pace the whole night,” Favreau said. “I think I had to make one or two saves that were a little challenging, and the rest, they kept guys in front of me.”

It’s Favreau’s second shutout of the year, and his fourth win this season.

While the Mustangs have been a bit inconsistent to start the season, Favreau says this game was one of their more complete efforts and they’ll have to carry it into their next games.

“Tonight I think we had a full sixty [minute] effort,” he said. “And that’s what we need to have going forward.”

Ryan Duguay scored his first as a Mustangs with just a few minutes to go in the third period, while Tye Evans scored his first of the season into the empty net with just over a minute to play.

The Mustangs improve to 5-6-4-0 on the year and will welcome the 8-8-0-0 Bruins back to the Palace on Saturday night.
