Unsuccessful penalty kill sink Mustangs in La Ronge
The Melfort Mustangs win streak has ended at three games after a 4-1 loss at the hands of the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Saturday night.
It was a hard fought first period as each team seemed to control the game in 10 minute stretches, but no goals were to be had.
However, the Mustangs would dominate the second period and be rewarded as Ben Tkachuk would feed Wyatt Day in front who made no mistake for his third goal of the season. Melfort seemed to have control in that period, but could not get another one to go. La Ronge did happen to get one with five minutes to play, a powerplay goal courtesy of Walker Jerome.
With a tie game heading into the third period, physicality picked up, but it was La Ronge who would be rewarded as the Mustangs couldn’t get the puck out of the zone which led to a point shot from Blake Ekren-Bratton that took a hop passed James Venne for a 2-1 game. Jacob Visentini made it a 3-1 game shortly thereafter, just as a Mustang penalty expired. It wasn’t credited as a powerplay goal, as the penalty had technically expired, but Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins says they still need to be better on the penalty kill.
