The Nipawin Hawks will attempt to start another winning streak with the Flin Flon Bombers travelling to town for a Tuesday night Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Sher-Wood Division matchup.

Nipawin had their three game winning streak busted on Saturday in a 7-3 home ice loss to the Battlefords, but Assistant Coach Levi Stuart said the team is still confident heading into the new week.

“I think we’ve really started to turn a corner here,” Stuart said after the club’s gameday skate. “The players are kind of in the same mindset as we are, we’re confident in ourselves and our group. We know we can play with anybody in this league.”

The Hawks are currently in eighth place in the SJHL standings, the Bombers sit in third. Each team has a victory on home ice in the season series between to the two rivals. Stuart said if Nipawin can play strong in their own end success should follow.

“If we take care of our own end and allow minimal shots from high quality areas, I think we start there and that translates into our ability to create offence,” Stuart said.

Some of the team’s recent success has been the resurgence of 19-year-old Zander Stewart who was name the SJHL defenceman of the week on Monday thanks to a goal and a pair of assists on the weekend that included a 5-4 win over Kindersley on Friday. The West Kelowna product is eighth in SJHL defenceman scoring after finally picking up his first goal of the season on Nov. 4. Stuart said working with Stewart daily he’s not surprised to see the second-year Hawk rewarded.

“He probably breaks more sticks than anyone on the team because he shoots so many pucks before and after practice. We do all sorts of blue line work and that’s starting to pay off for him. All the reps he’s put in are starting to pay off for him and I think it’s a big weight off his shoulders,” he said.

Face-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
