Mustangs set for rematch with Hounds, road game in Yorkton

The Melfort Mustangs have two intriguing matchups on the weekend as they look to get back into the thick of things for home ice advantage in the SJHL Playoffs.

On Friday, the Mustangs will be at home for a rematch with the Notre Dame Hounds, the team they just met on Tuesday, a game that resulted in a 3-2 loss for Melfort.

Mustangs forward Aidyn Hutchinson said in that game, and in a few other recent games, they need to clean things up a bit in their defensive zone, among other things to help them be succesful.

“That cost us a couple goals,” Hutchinson said. “And just being more simple.”

Melfort has won two of four games against the Hounds, but have lost the last two meetings, both of which were in Notre Dame. It was a 6-1 win for Melfort the last time these clubs met at the Northern Lights Palace.

While the Mustangs may have not played their best hockey as of late, going 2-3-0-0 since the calendar turned to 2023, but Hutchinson said they still have lots of confidence in their group.

“Couple talks in the room, just reset, and rebuild for this coming weekend,” he said.

Looking ahead to Saturday, the Mustangs will make their first trip this season to Yorkton to take on the Terriers. It will be the first time the Mustangs will visit Westland Arena since their game six victory in last seasons quarter-final series. In their only meeting this season, Melfort beat the Terriers 7-0.

Heading into Friday, the Mustangs are 19-12-5-1, good for sixth in the SJHL. They’re four points back of fifth place, and just five points back of second place. Notre Dame holds down the eighth and final playoff spot, while Yorkton is just three points back of the Hounds.

Friday nights game will be at the Palace in Melfort with puck drop at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday’s game in Yorkton will take place at 7 p.m. and you can catch all of the action on 105 CJVR.
