Mustangs earn convincing win at home over Hounds

Jan 21, 2023 | 9:29 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are back in the win column after losing back-to-back games for the first time in over two months.

It was also a bit of a revenge game for the Mustangs who beat the Hounds 7-1, just days after falling 3-2 to the Hounds in Notre Dame.

Mustangs Captain Ben Tkachuk had a goal and an assist in the win and said they were much more detailed defensively than they were in Tuesday’s loss.

“Overall I think we just played a harder, more physical game, finished off more pucks,” he said. “And it resulted well for us.”

It was a back-and-forth start to the game as the Mustangs didn’t get on the board until Tye Evans’ fifth of the year, almost halfway through the first frame. Tkachuk scored a highlight reel goal shortly thereafter to make it 2-0 after one period for the home team.

Kevin Minnoch, Wyatt Day, Wyatt Cook, and Dawson Leroux added to the goal-scoring for the Mustangs in the second period, while Clarke Huxley notched his third point of the night with a goal in the third period.

It wasn’t until the 13:50 mark of the third period that the Hounds managed to break the shutout for James Venne who stopped 33 of 34 he faced.

The win is the Mustangs 20th of the year, and they’ll look to make it 21 on Saturday when they visit the Yorkton Terriers, a rematch of last season’s SJHL Quarter-Final series that saw Yorkton win in seven. Tkachuk said Friday’s win is big for their confidence.

“We have a little bit of bad blood with these guys after last year in the playoffs,” Tkachuk said. “So, everyone that was on the team last year and the new guys coming in this year know that we want blood and we’re going to come out hard tomorrow night.”

Game time on Saturday is 7 p.m. at Westland Arena in Yorkton and you can catch all the action on 105 CJVR.
