Mustangs continue to look for consistency, host Bombers Tuesday

Jan 24, 2023 | 7:05 AM

A huge divisional matchup will take place at the Northern Lights Palace on Tuesday night as the Melfort Mustangs take on the Flin Flon Bombers.

The Mustangs have sputtered somewhat since the Christmas break, as the team that once went 11 games without a regulation loss has hovered around the .500 mark, going 3-3-0-1 since the calander turned to 2023.

Most recently, it was a 3-2 shootout loss to the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday night.

Mustangs defender Leith Olafson said they haven’t been putting in the right effort consistently.

“We’re not coming to work everyday,” he said. “One day we come to work, one day we don’t.”

While it is most certainly a frustrating stretch for the team, the Mustangs remain in the thick of things for the second to sixth seeds in the SJHL playoffs. Currently, the Mustangs are in sixth place with 47 points, but are just two points back of fifth place Estevan, and just seven back of second place Flin Flon, who will be at the Palace on Tuesday.

Olafson said they’ve got to focus on coming to work with the right mindset everyday.

“Have some more fun with it a little bit,” Olafson said. “And then just get the energy back up.”

Flin Flon currently holds a 3-1 series lead on the Mustangs with their last meeting coming on Nov. 26, a 3-2 overtime loss for Melfort in Flin Flon.

Game time at the Palace is 7:30 p.m.
