With the Saskatchewan Winter Games wrapping up, a Melfort team is bringing home bronze.

Team Lakeland was comprised of athletes from across the northeast who ended up bringing a total of 24 medals home with six gold, 17 silver and 11 bronze.

Among the winners was Melfort Special Olympics with

bowling team.

Team coach Marlene Earl told northeastNOW that the athletes were not only bringing hardware back to the community but making memories.

“They’ve been training hard and making friends along the way. They were having a really good time. It was a good experience for everybody.”

Only one bowler on the team was at the previous Saskatchewan Winter Games but despite having a relatively new team, they came together to earn a medal.

Earning bronze was a special feat considering the team was down a bowler and needed to use a substitution for the game. In addition, the team also faced an equally eager Moose Jaw.

Earl explained this year the team had a bit of extra practice time as a team due to the cancellation of the event last year.

“They knew they’d been on the team for two years, so as a team they’d been training for a couple of years.”

This year was a particularly special set of games as it was the 50th anniversary of the games and all winners get to boast a double-sided medal that features the history of Indigenous people in the province on one side and the other features the anniversary of the games.

Elsewhere in the Northeast, three Nipawin athletes brought in six medals.

Bringing the gold back to the Northeast was Aubrie Annand in the U13 female alpine skiing ski cross. She also earned two bronze medals in the U13 alpine skiing slalom on day one and day two.

Nipawin boasts two silver medals earned by Lane Annand in the U15 male alpine skiing slalom.

Bringing home a bronze medal in the U17 male alpine skiing slalom was Ty Annand.
