Ice Wolves take game one over Mustangs

The La Ronge Ice Wolves have earned a 1-0 series lead over the Melfort Mustangs after a 3-1 win at the Palace on Friday night.

Aidyn Hutchinson scored the Mustangs lone goal just five minutes into the game on the powerplay, but that was the only puck that got by Dawson Smith. He stopped 35 of 36 in the win.

With the Mustangs outshooting the Ice Wolves 36-17, Hutchinson said they maybe deserved better at times in the game.

“We had lots of shots, lots of good plays,” he said. “Just came out on the wrong end.”

La Ronge goals from Jacob Cossette and Dallyn Peekeekoot made it 2-1 after one, and Kale Taylor would add one more in the third for good measure to take game one by a 3-1 score.

Hutchinson said they’ll have to do a better job getting to Dawson Smith on Saturday night in Game two.

“We need to make plays down low, get pucks to the net and get it in the goalies eyes to have a lot of success,” Hutchinson said.

Puck drop on Saturday is 7:30 p.m.
