Helping Nipawin Handi-works

Nipawin business collecting jars for a good cause

A Nipawin business is hoping that spring cleaners will reduce, reuse and recycle by donating empty jars to help a community-based organization.

The Homestead Cannery is asking people with extra canning jars to donate them during their spring canning drive.

Owner and organizer Patti Propp told northeastNOW this not only reduces waste but helps those in the Nipawin Handiworks program, an agency dedicated to supporting adults with intellectual disabilities while providing skills training.

“They can check the jars and stuff like that and make sure that they’re all OK with no cracks and then donate whatever.”

For each jar donated, 25 cents will be given back to the Nipawin Handiworks program.

Propp explained she not only wanted to donate proceeds of the jar drive but also help get some foot traffic into Nipawin Handiworks.

“I went to go check out their store. I was like, wow, like this is incredible. I thought if people dropped off the jars there, then they would be able to see what Handiworks is doing.”

She wants to organize future fundraisers with Handiworks.

For those with excess jars, you can donate clean and label-free canning jars to Nipawin Handiworks or The Homestead Cannery.

Canning jars accepted are Bernardin, Ball, and Gem which are quarts, 500 ml, 250 ml, or 125 ml. Lids are not required.
