Marburg becomes third Bronco in last week to commit to U Sports hockey career

For the third time in the past seven days, a graduating player from the Humboldt Broncos has decided to extend their hockey career in U Sports.

Sam Marburg has joined Chase Lacombe and Jacob Boucher in the academic route, as he has committed to the Queens University Gaels for the 2023-24 season.

Marburg, a North Vancouver product joined the Broncos before the COVID-shortened season in 2020-21, which led to his rookie season only progressing into four games and one point.

When the SJHL returned in 2021/22, however, he would go on to suit up 53 times, recording 17 points and 149 penalty minutes.

“Sam has worked extremely hard to give himself this opportunity,” said head coach and general manager Scott Barney. “The way he plays the game will translate really well to the next level. He’s punishing at both ends of the ice, he takes pucks to the net, and he’s a beast to play against every shift.”

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound forward would go on to continue his physical style of play in his third and final year of eligibility this season, racking up 25 points and 104 penalty minutes.

Meanwhile, in 19 combined playoff contests, throughout his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League career, the 2002-born forward collected 4 points and 34 penalty minutes.

In the 2022-23 season, Queens finished with a 12-12-2 record in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East conference.

“Queens is one of the most regarded degrees in Canada, so this is an amazing achievement and opportunity for Sam, not just on the ice, but in life as well,” added Barney. “We’re very proud and excited to follow his success.”
