The Melfort Mustangs have announced that graduating player Dawson Leroux has committed to the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings of the Alberta College Athletic Association (ACAC).

The 2002-born forward will join fellow former Stangs Kevin Minnoch and Nolan Doell for the 2023-24 season.

“I am super excited to start a new chapter in Red Deer,” Leroux said. “They’ve got a top-notch hockey program and I’m looking forward to joining a team who is fresh off a championship.”

As a 20-year-old this season, Leroux played in 54 of a possible 56 games, scoring 22 times and adding 32 assists.

His 22 goals and 54 points were both good for second on the team, while he was also tied for 14th in SJHL scoring.

Meanwhile, in 10 playoff games, Leroux added two goals and two assists, including the overtime winner in game five against the La Ronge Ice Wolves, in round one.

The Lethbridge, Alta. product, joined Melfort prior to the 2021/22 season.

During that season, Leroux played in all 58 games, scoring 17 goals and adding 26 assists for 43 points, which was fifth on the Mustangs.

And, in the seven-game playoff series against Yorkton that year, Leroux pitched in four assists, tied for the most assists during that run on the team.

The 5-foot-11, 184-pound forward only missed two games during his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League tenure.

Prior to his time with the Mustangs, Leroux played parts of three seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with the Olds Grizzly’s.

In 68 career regular-season games, he scored eight times and added nine helpers. Leroux also played in five playoff games as well, finding the back of the net once.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings are defending ACAC champions.
