Hitting the links

Northeast golf courses now open

May 5, 2023 | 5:26 PM

For those who have been anxious to hit the links in the northeast, they’re now able to.

Courses in Melfort, Nipawin, Tisdale, and Humboldt all opened their operations this week, with most of the tee times beginning on Friday.

According to the club pro at Nipawin Evergreen, this has been one of the better starts in recent memory.

“The golf course came through the winter in very good condition and we don’t see any issues with starting up right away. In fact, this is one of the earliest starting dates we’ve had, and it’s maybe one of the better years the course has come through the winter,” said Derrick Tallon.

The warm weather has definitely played a big part in courses opening this weekend, as temperatures have been in the high teens to low twenties.

“Toque sales will definitely be down, but with the warm temperatures, everybody’s anxious to get out, and I think we as operators of the course, are anxious to get people out there and get the season rolling,” Tallon added.

The golf bug hit a lot of people during the COVID years, which saw record-breaking course attendance across the world.

While Tallon isn’t necessarily expecting quite those high of numbers, as all other events and activities are back in full swing, he’s hopeful that more people will still stop by every once in a while.

“We’ve got our typical perennial events and a couple of other extras that we haven’t had in the past, so as far as business goes, hopefully, we can maintain the numbers we’ve had in the last two years, which had been exceptional. We just hope everybody can come up and play lots of golf,” he explained.

“We hope the numbers will stay up there, but I think realistically, they will have a small decrease, and hopefully, we can just minimize the decrease in play, with other activities being available. We know that golf cannot sustain those numbers we had during COVID, but if we can minimize the drop, it’s still gonna be a plus.”
