Tye Scherger announced as Mustangs’ new assistant coach

A familiar name to the Melfort Mustangs organization will soon be back with the team, this time in a different role.

Mustang Alumni, Tye Scherger has agreed to become the new assistant coach for the SJHL club.

“(Trevor) Blevins reached out to me after the season, just put a word in my head, and I thought, you know what, that’d be awesome,” Scherger told northeastNOW. “I want to come back and give everything that I learned playing junior hockey, I want to give it to the kids and I want to bring a title back to Melfort.”

Scherger played just five games in his first season with the blue and green (COVID-shortened year) before suiting up as a 20-year-old in his final year of eligibility in 2021/22 as an assistant captain.

During that season, he played 58 combined games between the regular season and playoffs, registering 21 points (eight goals and 13 assists), while adding 140 penalty minutes.

“My role is being the energy guy and leading by example. I do everything for the team, and as a coach now I’m just gonna bring good energy to the rink every day. Even if we’re up or down, I’m gonna be the energy guy, I’m gonna make sure all the boys have got good vibes going all the time, and then obviously give them my knowledge and we’ll have lots of fun,” Scherger explained.

The Macklin product has spent a handful of years in the hockey world, including time with the U15 AA West Central Wheat Kings, U18 AAA Battlefords Stars, Battlefords North Stars, Olds Grizzlys, and the Macklin Mohawks.

Scherger even added coaching to his resume this past season, helping the midget team In Macklin win league provincials.

He said that between last year’s experience helping coach, as well as his pre-established relationship with Blevins (especially as time as an assistant captain) is properly setting him up for the journey ahead.

“The (AAA) coach asked someone to help and I started there and we won provincials in the league so I was like I wish I could get the opportunity one day to coach at a higher level and then Blevins gave me that call and I was super excited. I want to stay in the game as well, so it made it even better,” added Scherger.

“Being one of the assistant captains there, we always had communication going on. The way he coaches is kind of the way I played, a hard, fast and physical style. We’ll connect right off the get-go and we’ll be good.”

The team posted a photo and message for Scherger, welcoming him back to the club and community.

Scherger replicated the kind words back to the Stangs and Melfort area, crediting the fans for always supporting the team, and welcoming every new addition with open arms.
