Suncrest College hosts official launch, says enrollment is up since merger

Sep 15, 2023 | 11:00 AM

Suncrest College is just two and a half weeks into its academic year and is already seeing positive results due to its recent merger.

The post-secondary institution came together back in July as a culmination of Cumberland College and Parkland College.

Since then, Suncrest has seen an increase in enrollment as the College services a larger area throughout Saskatchewan.

“We have seen some enrollment increase for sure, some of that being attributed to having had new programs that were announced last year,” said president and CEO, Alison Dubreuil.

According to Dubreuil, enrollment has also been able to increase because the College brings something different to the table and can help the other side in areas of need.

“The whole point of our merger was to ensure that we could attract and retain students. That requires us to work together and share our resources, ensuring that we’re nimble and that we have programs that are available for our students.”

Dubreuil also explained that despite there being significant overlap in programs offered between the two former institutions, the demand across the province is still there, and it’s only continuing to grow.

“Both colleges have had programs in place for a number of years and they’re there because the demand is there. Although we look for opportunities to work closer together and look for new, innovative programming, there are programs that still serve a wonderful, amazing purpose, and they still are in high demand.”

The already evident success of Suncrest was celebrated on Thursday as they hosted an official launch event in Yorkton.

Advanced Education Minister Gordon S. Wyant, K.C., along with senior government and community representatives were in attendance to celebrate the launch of the new college name and brand.

Dubreuil added that having it during the school calendar was important to them, as it made sure everyone was included.

“We had an excellent day, it certainly was exciting, and it was a day of celebration. We wanted to include all our staff, all the 11 campuses, and all our programs across the region in on the celebration. Today was a day of pride as we move forward as true and equal partners.”

Those 11 locations include Canora, Esterhazy, Fort Qu’Appelle, Kamsack, Melville and Yorkton, as well as three northeast locations in Melfort, Nipawin, and Tisdale.

Suncrest College has also launched a new website, is looking at transitioning its social media accounts, and is opening its enrollment for the 2024/25 school year this October.
