Sleeva’s hat trick leads Mustangs over Broncos

The Melfort Mustangs extended their point streak to 11 games on Friday night, picking up a 5-2 win over the Humboldt Broncos.

The contest marked the third of six meetings between the out-of-division rivals, as Melfort now has the season-series lead at two games to one.

“That’s a big statement game for us, with a couple of games in hand for Humboldt, we had to come in here and play our game in our home barn, and I think we did that tonight as lots of guys chipped in for a team effort tonight,” said Mustangs’ forward, Clay Sleeva.

“Just gotta have an easy recovery tonight, take care of our bodies, just the same mentality as we had tonight, and hopefully pull two more points to get the weekend sweep.”

The Stangs will now head to Elgar Petersen Arena, the home of the Broncos, looking to take the pair of weekend games.

The Saturday night contest will also mark the first of six road games in a row for the Blue and Green.

“SJ road trips, especially for long stretches, are definitely the toughest games you’ll ever play. So to start with two points right before, hopefully that gets the momentum rolling and I think that’ll really help us on the road,” Sleeva added.

The former Yorkton Terriers captain was one of the main reasons the Mustangs were so dominant on Friday, as he put up a hat trick along with playing at every end of the ice.

According to Sleeva, his parents drove up to watch the game, one he views as multi-dimensional.

“I feel like I can do a little bit of everything, I can play on the power play, can put the puck in the net, can pass and can penalty kill as well. I’m just trying to do as much as I can for the team and I have great linemates which helps for sure too because I think we’re really clicking,” he told northeastNOW.

“That was my first junior hat trick, so it felt good and kind of got the monkey off the back because it was my first goals of 2024, so hopefully I can keep it going tomorrow.”

The Suncrest College pre-game show will begin at 6:45 p.m. in Humboldt, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
