Senior Men’s Curling Provincials underway in Melfort

Mar 14, 2024 | 5:00 PM

Saskatchewan’s best men’s senior curlers have all descended on Melfort to compete in this weekend’s provincial championships.

The first draw began at 4 p.m. on Thursday, as two pools of six will each play five round-robin games, en route to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals, late Saturday and all day Sunday.

“It’s a good deal for us, Melfort Curling Club GM Gerald MacGillivray told northeastNOW. “We just sanded the rocks here a couple of weeks ago and we got the ice prepped to make sure it has good curl, so just want to make sure we have good ice, a good facility, good curl and go from there… there should be some really good curling here this weekend.”

Two draws will be played late Thursday, while two draws will go during the day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The top three teams from each pool will advance to the playoffs, with the top seed in each boll getting a bye to the semi-finals.

“It’s always nice to have a provincial once in a while, it’s hard to have the big ones over at the Palace, but this should be good, we’ve had the juniors and the masters here, but it’s the first time we’ve got seniors here for a number of years,” added MacGillivray.

“We have CurlSask as a sponsor for it, so hopefully we get a good crowd, make a little money at the door and sell some 50/50s… just want people to come and see some good curling, there’s some teams here that play in the men’s provincial circuit, so there should be some good curling here.”

The Senior Women’s Provincial Curling Championships are also being held this weekend, but are in Marstensville.

The two mark the first championships in March on the 2023/24 Curl Sask championships schedule, with just the Mixed and the Triples Cup left before the end of the season, which goes next weekend.

No local teams (Melfort or Tisdale) are participating in this weekend’s Senior Mens.
